Business Is Political

Nowadays, everything seems to be political — wearing a face mask, socializing with friends — nearly everything seems to act as a division of “Us” vs. “Them.”

For years I served clients who insisted on keeping politics away from their business. I could support this before. I can’t any longer.

The United States has been twisted away from it’s roots of being a land of opportunity and a space for self-creation, into a selfish, self-centered, competitive landscape where attorneys feel empowered to arm themselves outside of their home and threaten others of a different race or political belief.

The term “ANTIFA” has been created to instill fear of family, neighbors, and clients. The term, in it’s origin is quite simple — anti-fascist. This is a tenant that is foundational to the American philosophy. Our founding fathers created a representative democracy specifically to ensure fascism couldn’t take hold in our land.

And yet…we are dangerously close to just that.

This is not the time for pretenses. This is the time for action.

I encourage ALL OF MY LEGAL CLIENTS TO CREATE AND POST THEIR POSITIONING ON RACISM, SEXISM, LGBTQ. Your belief matter. Where you invest your money matters. YOU MATTER!

This election, in just a couple of weeks, if critical for our future. The environment, the rights or minorities, and a possibility to finally acknowledge and address systemic racism is on the line. The Supreme Court continues to lean in a more Conservative tilt, jeopardizing women’s rights and fundamental body safeties. Your voice matters, perhaps more now than ever before.

I watched this clip of Jesse Jackson reciting Reverend William Holmes Border’s poem: I AM SOMEBODY with my child and I wanted to share it here.

I am Somebody! I am Somebody! I may be poor, But I am Somebody. I may be young, But I am Somebody. I may be on welfare, But I am Somebody. I may be small, But I am Somebody. I may have made mistakes, But I am Somebody. My clothes are different, My face is different, My hair is different, But I am Somebody. I am Black, Brown, or White. I speak a different language But I must be respected, protected, never rejected. I am God’s child!

I urge you to get political. State your positions clearly. Engage in conversations with others who may have different opinions. This is going to be an increasingly important and valuable trend in business.

Please book a time if you’d like to start your business statement for posting in stores, online, and for your employees. Do not get confused — discrimination is illegal. The political climate is confused — intentionally so. Your voice matters. And you will be held to account should you violate the law… even if politicians are not… yet.
